Chapter 13- Accidental

Insane with anger, I ran out of the patio doors in the kitchen that led to the colossal sized pool in the back. I walked over to watch Cayden playing in the grass nearby. He was using his Transformers action figures to battle the racecars he had stacked all in a row. It was the cutest thing I’d ever seen. I decided to grab my Vogue magazine off the marble kitchen counter and join him by the pool rather than confront him about his drawings.

“Hey Cayden. Are you having fun, sweetie?”

I said to him as I walked back out there and plopped down on the elongated lawn chair. He didn't reply. My reach to shuffle his hair was intercepted when he leaned away arching his back in a way so I couldn't touch him. I leaned in closer for another reach but it was blocked as well.

"I don't know you, lady. Get off!" He screamed.

“Cayden what’s wrong with you? You know me. It’s mommy! I wouldn’t hurt you.”

I explained to my son who was now ignoring the shit out of me. I flipped my hair back behind my ear and sat in astonishment as to why he was acting like I was a complete stranger.

“Honey, we need to talk. I know I have been pre-occupied with other things lately but mommy always loves you no matter what.”

I waited for him to run into my arms like he always did. For him to tell me everything was all right and that he loved me too, but he didn’t and it would never come. It seemed that I sprinted for the bar grabbing a vodka bottle and chugging it without conviction. In the distance, Marta stood gawking, bowing her head in shame. I wasn’t in the mood to respond to her disappointment so I continued to chug turning my back to her. After gaining a sense of relief and now filled with liquid courage, I decided to stop at nothing to get through to Cayden. As a kid, he is more easily swayed if thrown a bribe, especially a SpongeBob related one.

“Hey sweetie,” I said nearly stumbling through the glass sliding doors again. “I’ve got two tickets to see Spongebob on ice tonight. Wanna go?”

His eyes lit up like Christmas lights in Times Square. His facial expression assured me that I was in for sure. Anything that put a smile on his face that bright had to have worked, but it would quickly change.

“Oh mommy, you’re sick again.” He said putting his head back down to his toys.

“What do you mean baby? I’m not sick. I feel great actually.” I replied trying not to slur my words any worse than they already were. He was silent again. I kneeled down to him getting forehead to forehead with him so that he would pay attention to me and not his toys.

“Cayden, I don’t know what’s wrong with you but you stop it right now! Do you understand?” My voice and grip on his arm remained firm with him.
